GMR Infrastructure has reported progress on its proposed Multi Product Special Economic Zone in Tamil Nadu. The project is a JV with Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (Tidco), which would hold up to 11% stake in the project. As of May 2013, the lands for this project have been identified and are being procured by the project company. It is proposed to implement a sector specific SEZ for Engineering Sector in about 280 acres of land, in Phase-I of the project. The construction
work related to external infrastructure like roads, power and water supply will take 1-1.5 years. The internal infrastructure like internal roads, water supply network, drainage works, etc will be developed
within 6 months of signing MOUs with the industrial tenants. The proposed SEZ will predominantly house Engineering, Electronics Manufacturing, Automotive, Aerospace industries and will also set up a multiskill development center (MSDC) along with German training services firm GIZ IS. It may be noted that the MoU for the project was signed way back in 2007.
