Periyar Energy is planning to set up a coal based thermal power plant in Tamil Nadu. The project involves setting up a 2x300 MW Coal Based Thermal Power Plant at village Melmendai, in Taluk Vilathikulam, in Tuticorin district. Coal requirement for 100% domestic coal will be 2.66 MTPA; and for 100% imported coal will be 2.33 MTPA. Option of blended coal (60 % imported and 40 % domestic coal) will be 2.45 MTPA. Pulversied FBC Boilers will be adopted. As of October 2013, the project has received first level of environment clearance from Ministry of Environment and Forests.
