Inland Waterways Authority of India, belonging to Ministry of Shipping is planning to take up a 37 km waterway project between Sholinganallur to Kalpakkam in South Buckingham Canal. The project covers a total length of 1,078 km consisting of Kakinada-Puducherry canal systems integrated with Godavari and Krishna rivers. It envisages dredging and excavation to develop a navigational channel, construction of three terminals and navigational locks, replacement of one existing bridge at Kelambakkam, and installation of navigational aids. As of January 2014, bids have been invited for implementing the project.
